Mountain Transit seeking school bus drivers

MILTON — Mountain Transit is seeking drivers to fill school bus driver positions now available in Chittenden County. A job fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Vermont Department of Labor office, 63 Pearl St. in Burlington.

Mountain Transit offers job opportunities for transportation professionals at its Milton terminal. Milton-based drivers serve a number of school districts in Chittenden and Addison counties. The company offers a professional work environment, flexible schedules, competitive wages, group medical plans and outstanding opportunities for growth and promotion.

School bus drivers transport children to and from school each day on established routes. Additional extracurricular runs such as sports, field trips and charter work also may be available. Typical runs are during morning and afternoons and average 20 to 30 hours per week.

"We're looking for people who enjoy making a difference in children's lives, "said Dina Cooper, STA's corporate recruiting director. "This is a great job for Moms who want to have the same schedule as their school-aged children, retirees and college students looking for extra income."

Job requirements include a clean driving record and the ability to pass a Department of Transportation physical, a pre-employment drug test and a criminal background check. Drivers with Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDL) are preferred, especially those with P and S endorsements.

Free training will be provided for good drivers without school bus experience. Mountain Transit's training program includes classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction to prepare candidates for CDL written and road examinations.

The company also currently is offering sign-on incentives for qualified drivers at all levels and additional bonuses for those who return for the 2008/2009 school year.
