The students and the sunrises on my way to my first pick up.
Can you share a memorable story or experience from your time with STA?
When I was finishing my afternoon trip, and I had one child left. As I was pulling up to his stop, I noticed he was putting all the windows up on the bus for me. When he was getting off, I told him that putting up the windows was nice, but he did not need to do that. He responded, “I know, but you are nice to us, and I want to do something nice for you.” It made my whole week.
What is something important about your job that others may not realize?
The impact we have on the children. The bus is the start of their school day, and I genuinely believe that a fun, relaxing and safe bus ride sets their day up to be a good one.
Every line of work has its ups and downs. What helps to motivate you during challenging times?
What helps motivate me is the fact that I can help someone have a better day by just smiling and saying good morning. It takes very little effort to be nice, and if that’s what is keeping people from having bad days then that is motivation enough.
What advice or encouragement would you offer to someone considering joining the STA Family?
Be patient and respectful with your students. This job requires you to safely take care of many children’s transportation, and they will have different levels of energy and moods throughout the day, week, etc. Yelling and screaming at children isn’t as effective as showing them respect from the day they enter your bus and then giving them gentle reminders of the rules throughout the year.
