When it comes to navigating the road to leadership, Tammy Taylor’s journey has paved the way for an inspiring and impactful career. Her journey with Student Transportation of America (STA) in Jacksonville, FL, began when she and a close friend saw an opportunity to earn extra income while still having plenty of time for their families. A key benefit was not having to worry about childcare, as she could bring her children along. Although initially she was unsure about the new environment, Tammy quickly realized that joining the student transportation industry would open the door to many great accomplishments.
“STA’s main focus is safety. Not just the safety of the kids on the bus but the safety of our employees.”
Tammy’s journey with STA has been one of growth and discovery. Over the years, she’s worn many hats—from field trip coordinator to payroll assistant, all while continuing her duties as a dispatcher. Her dedication and hard work led her to rise through the ranks, becoming an assistant and operations manager, and now, Area General Manager. With each new role, Tammy gained valuable experiences and a deep understanding of the student transportation industry. Having worked with other companies, she’s come to realize that what truly sets STA’s family of companies apart is its unwavering commitment to safety—not just for the students, but for its employees as well. This dedication has made her journey even more meaningful, knowing that she’s part of a company that values the well-being of everyone it serves.
“Every driver is important. Even if you only have one run, that’s still important to get those kids to and from school.”
Tammy has always focused on building strong relationships with her team, school districts, community leaders, and families. These connections have enabled her and STA’s Jacksonville Team to make a lasting impact on the community. One moment that stood out to Tammy was when her team came together to help a nonverbal child found walking alone. Thanks to the quick thinking and collaboration of her staff, they were able to safely reunite the child with their worried family. This heartwarming experience is a testament to the compassion and teamwork that Tammy fosters in her team, and it reflects her strength as a leader who truly cares for those she serves.
In another instance, Tammy recalls a driver expressing concern for one of her students as Thanksgiving break approached. The driver bravely asked the team to help make the student’s holiday special. Without hesitation, they came together to provide a food package, ensuring that the child enjoyed a festive and memorable holiday—another example of how STA’s employees go above and beyond for their community.
For Tammy, it’s not just about creating efficient bus routes or safely transporting students; it’s about giving back in meaningful ways. These moments highlight the importance of strong leadership and ongoing development. By nurturing qualities like empathy and collaboration, STA empowers its employees to grow, thrive, and make a difference. This shared dedication fuels personal growth and the success of the entire organization, shaping a brighter future for everyone involved.
