For many, a job in student transportation might seem like just another role, but for Jesse Francis, it was the start of something much bigger. In 2015, he joined Student Transportation of America (STA) as a technician in Londonderry, NH, not realizing it would spark a career defined by growth, leadership, and a deep passion for helping others succeed.
Growing up, Jesse’s father owned a vehicle repair business, exposing him early on to the world of mechanics. This foundation made his transition into the transportation industry feel natural. But it was the culture at STA—and the leadership —that truly set his journey in motion. Recognizing Jesse’s potential, his leaders encouraged him to keep pushing forward, knowing there was room for him to grow.
“There are things you learn about that you wouldn’t have known otherwise going to [a terminal] location.”
Jesse’s career at STA quickly gained momentum. In the summer of 2016, he was promoted to Shop Manager and just two years later, he transitioned to the newly expanded shop in Merrimack, NH, where he continued to develop his leadership skills. For four years, he led the shop, ensuring its success while mentoring those around him. By the summer of 2022, Jesse had taken on an additional role, assisting the recruitment team to help fill vacant maintenance positions across the Northeast. His ability to connect with people and provide guidance made him an invaluable resource.
Through it all, Jesse found fulfillment in supporting his colleagues. His belief in the importance of recognition led to the development of a maintenance staff recognition program at STA.
“I’ve enjoyed immensely, being able to give a little bit back because as a tech, you don’t always feel like you’re appreciated. But when somebody starts coming around and recognizing your time in the shop, it’s huge.”
One of Jesse’s most memorable moments at STA was traveling out to Brown Transportation in Amsterdam, NY to Celebrate the maintenance manager’s incredible 45-year career in the maintenance department. Seeing him honored with a plaque for his dedication reminded Jesse why he values STA’s culture. Moments like these reinforce the importance of showing appreciation for the hardworking teams that keep operations running smoothly.
STA’s commitment to career growth is evident in Jesse’s journey. Leaders like Gregg Stinson, EVP of Eastern Business Group, saw potential in him early on and encouraged him to keep striving for more. In turn, Jesse now provides that same guidance to those following in his footsteps.
Jesse’s leadership style reflects his personal journey, inspired by the support he received, and he makes it a priority to uplift his team. Whether it’s printing and framing certificates, handing out STA-branded jackets, or simply taking the time to meet employees face-to-face, Jesse understands that small gestures can make a big impact.
“I love helping people because I’ve been in that position, and it’s very rewarding.”
Now serving as the Administrator of Maintenance Training, Jesse’s focus is on fostering growth and development for STA’s technicians and maintenance teams. Having dedicated nearly a decade to STA, he remains deeply committed to the company’s mission and the people who make it thrive. Drawing from years of hands-on experience in the shop, he brings a deep understanding of the challenges faced by technicians and maintenance managers, allowing him to provide meaningful support and guidance.
Jesse’s belief in STA’s culture comes from firsthand experience. Having worked with other student transportation companies, he quickly recognized that STA stood apart—defined by a culture of empathy, support, and opportunity. Now, he is committed to paying that forward, helping maintenance staff navigate their careers with the insight of someone who has walked the same path. His advice to those considering a career at STA is simple: “Go for it.”
As he looks to the future, Jesse hopes to expand maintenance training company-wide, ensuring even more employees have the tools and support they need to succeed. His journey is a testament to STA’s commitment to career growth, proving that with the right environment and support, a job can become a lasting legacy.
