David ‘Zak’ Schoolcraft’s path to success with Student Transportation of America (STA) is a true testament to how determination and the right work environment can foster growth. After 20+ years in the automotive industry, working in roles from sales to finance, Zak was ready for a change. When the pandemic hit, Zak saw it as an opportunity to start fresh and, in June 2021, joined STA as a bus driver in Gasport, New York. It was a decision that not only reignited his passion for work but also offered him something he had long craved: balance.

“Spending time with family and having a work-life balance is important to me, and I can happily say I have that here [at STA].”

For Zak, one of the most meaningful perks of working at STA was being able to take his children along on his routes, something that allowed him to combine work and family time in a way he had never experienced before. This flexibility and STA’s supportive culture made the transition from his previous career seamless, giving him a newfound sense of purpose.

Within a year, Zak’s drive and leadership skills caught the attention of his supervisors. He was promoted to dispatcher in May of 2022, and just a few months later, he took on the role of Terminal Manager at STA’s Genesee Valley location in Alexander, New York. Zak credits much of his growth to his mentor and friend, AJ Smith, who showed him what it means to truly lead by example. This approach to leadership has helped Zak thrive, creating an environment of respect and trust among his team.

“My mantra is that you must lead by example. I’m not going to tell anyone to do something I wouldn’t do myself.”

Zak’s most memorable moment at STA came in January, 2024, when he received a call from AJ offering him the Terminal Manager position at Lockport, New York. “I was shocked because they entrusted me with 300 instead of 40 people and that’s amazing,” he recalls, beaming with pride. It was the culmination of his hard work, dedication, and passion for the job. Moving from managing a smaller team to overseeing a larger one was both a challenge and an honor, and Zak felt accomplished to have earned the trust of his colleagues.

Zak’s story is a testament to the importance of prioritizing personal well-being and family. He encourages anyone considering a career with STA to approach it with an open mind, emphasizing the value of continuous learning. “You have to be willing to learn and not be complacent because complacency kills. Don’t go in thinking you’re going to be an expert right away,” Zak advises.

“Your perspective on life shapes everything—it’s all about how you choose to see and create your own path.”

Through every challenge, Zak maintains a positive mindset, always keeping the main goal in focus: the safe transportation of children. His journey from the automotive industry to becoming a key leader at STA is proof that with the right perspective and support, anyone can find balance, fulfillment, and success. Zak’s journey shows that STA is not just a workplace—it’s a place where employees can thrive, embrace new opportunities, and advance their careers while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. For Zak, STA has been more than just a job—it’s been the start of a fulfilling career.
