For decades, Student Transportation of America (STA) has cultivated leaders from a variety of roles, and Brian Urwin’s journey is a shining example of this. While many leaders have started as bus drivers, Brian’s path began as a mechanic. His experience in the student transportation industry, however, stretches beyond that. In 2013, he took on the role of shop manager in South Omaha, NE, and quickly began to expand his skills and knowledge. Over time, he advanced to area maintenance manager, and today, Brian serves as STA’s maintenance director, overseeing four regions across the U.S.
“The environment here [STA] really sets us apart from everybody, we are a true team, from leadership to anyone in general.”
For Brian, having a work environment with open communication and support has been crucial to his journey with STA. With such an interactive role, he emphasizes the importance of communication to the teams across the board. He adjusts his communication styles to meet the needs of each team member, noting that it’s one of the unique qualities of his job.
“The most rewarding aspect of my role is the sense of accomplishment we experience every day on the maintenance side. It’s also the relationships and friendships we build while working together as a team that keep me motivated to move forward.”
One of Brian’s proudest moments at STA came in 2023 when every bus in Wisconsin passed the state inspection. This achievement was a direct result of his hands-on leadership and the dedication of his hard-working team. The culture of teamwork and mutual respect that Brian fosters has been essential in keeping morale high, even during challenging times. Whether he’s getting his hands dirty replacing an engine or guiding a technician through a complex diagnostic issue, Brian’s leadership style keeps his team motivated and engaged every day.
He’s always loved working on cars and everything maintenance, so for him, leading a team that is constantly working to better the student transportation industry is truly rewarding. STA is deeply involved in advancing alternative fuel technologies, and Brian feels honored to be at the forefront of this transformation. Leading the shift to innovations like alternative fuels and electric buses has been a game changer, revolutionizing the way STA operates and shaping the future of student transportation.
“I’d like to retire with STA. I’m not looking to go anywhere else, so you’ll find me here 20+ years from now.”
If there’s one thing Brian is grateful for, it’s how STA fosters a healthy work-life balance while maintaining open communication with executive leadership. His advice to anyone considering joining the STA team is simple: go for it. “Even if you don’t land your ideal position right away, once you’re part of the STA family and gain experience, your efforts won’t go unnoticed,” says Brian. “STA’s supportive leadership, which genuinely cares for every employee, is what truly sets them apart from others.”
At STA, it’s more than just a job—it’s a place where your contributions are valued, your growth is supported, and you’re part of a team that feels like family.
